How do you eat yours?
Sjaniel: On the entire spectrum of fruits, bananas are my favourite! Not only the sweetness but probably the texture more than anything else - nature’s dessert.  We all have our own specific banana preferences ranging from semi-green, bright yellow, slightly spotty to brown but some people have a full fledged phobia of bananas called Bananaphobia (yes, it’s the scientific word). ...

Our well spent time in blissful Andalucia
We were lucky enough to get some time off this month.  We headed over to beautiful Andulicia, Spain for some sunshine, home grown food and twice daily yoga….with a touch of NLP thrown in for good measure. Our friend Hayley studied with the amazing yoginis Vidya Heisel and Jennilee Toner in Thailand a few years back and convinced us that we needed some time with these spiritual...

Beside the seaside, inside the sea...
The healing properties of saltwater have been recognised for many years. Hippocrates noted the effect it had on the cut hands of Greek fisherman over 2000 years ago. So as summer approaches, here are some reasons to get besides the seaside and swim in the sea. Salt water heals wounds because it is cleansing as well as bacteriostatic (stops bacteria from multiplying) which reduces infection....

The C-Word
Did you know that cholesterol, a waxy substance produced by the liver and found in certain foods, is needed to make vitamin D, some hormones (including sex hormones), build cell walls and create bile salts that help you digest fat?  Pretty crucial stuff. Our livers come with feedback mechanisms that regulate cholesterol production in...

Rainy day soup
Is this rain coming or going? Yesterday was all about thunder and lightning and I had to brave it to my 7.30pm ‘Get Flexi’ class @ No.1 Awesome Street. So what to eat beforehand?  6pm is a bit early for dinner but thoughts of food while you’re trying to meditate and move is not cool. Hot soup it is.  This easy one was a Swede Carrot Laksa - never tried before but definitely...

The Sweet Stuff
Sjaniel: My default mode of bad habits is usually that of ‘sugar addict’.  I have spent almost a lifetime trying to overcome my cravings and passion for sugary things and have at least managed to say goodbye to shop bought, commercial sweets for the most part. There are so many different sugar ‘alternatives’ on the market today, but few are really good for us and almost...

Who put the wheat in buckwheat?
Because it doesn’t belong there…they’ve gone and misled us! Buckwheat is not a wheat!     It’s not even a cereal grain like spelt or kamute. Buckwheat is completely gluten free.  This highly nutritious seed, related to rhubarb, makes a better wholefood alternative to cereal grains. Rich in magnesium as well as flavonoids (these enhance Vit C and act as antioxidents)...
