Florence Lefebvre was persuaded to attend a yoga class ten years ago and never looked back. She has now been teaching for 7 years throughout London and we love attending her classes http://www.facebook.com/FloYoga
This is Flo’s philosophy on food….
REAL FOOD FOR A HAPPIER YOU
Florence Lefebvre

We all know what it feels like to eat a good meal. Our taste buds have a fun time discerning each flavour that comes into play in a dish and the experience leaves us feeling satisfied and satiated.
What we can tend to overlook is how much the type of food we eat actually originates from or impacts onto our thoughts, emotions and moods.
When feeling stressed or tired for instance, we are drawn to foods that are going to give us a little kick, like caffeine, chocolate and crisps. These foods are described as “rajastic” in yoga or “stimulating”. They are bitter, sour, dry or salty and do the job of “jolting us up” to start with, but then become “tamasic” or lethargy-producing when our digestive system comes to grip with them (the well-known kick and crash effect). Rajastic food can turn out to be more than mere stimulants and make us feel nervous, anxious, snappy, agitated and even hyper!
“Tamasic” foods are at the opposite end of the spectrum. They provide a lot of calories in the form of simple carbohydrates, but little or no nutrients. Alcohol, sugar and white flour all fall into this category.
We can be drawn to these foods when in need of comfort, pampering and reassurance. What we derive from them though is a sense of sluggishness and heaviness, which affects our ability to concentrate and interact… Zzzz…
So what is the best food to eat then?
Nothing less than pure food! This last category is referred to as “sattvic”. It includes whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. These foods provide nourishment for the body and the mind. They help us feel light and focused, maintaining our energy levels throughout the day.
Just look here for inspiring recipes and to optimise your health, start showing yourself some love by introducing some yoga postures into your routine. Yoga will put you in touch with your body, stimulate blood circulation, assist your digestion and calm the fluctuations of your mind (to name only a few benefits!). Does it sound like a miraculous discipline? Well, I would say that it kind of is, but I guess you will have to see for yourself!

Not only have toxic chemicals crept into our homes but we are dead set on wiping out germs with antibacterial products, minimizing our body’s bacteria fighting ability.
Choose plant-based, natural materials and safer synthetics. We have a list of our recommended products and cookware coming soon…..

Dinner to celebrate ten years of friendship with lovely Alina. Ricotta stuffed courgette flowers, octopus and sous vide fillet of beef in an opulent dining hall redressed as a basketball court. Highlights:
Death in Venice cocktail - campari, prosecco, grapefruit juice and angostura bitters. Very bitter - see pic below.
Amuse bouche - cauliflower puree over diced baked apple. It really worked.

Last week, we had such a fun evening cooking with our two most stylish and up–for-it friends, Francesca (Vogue) and Chloe (Garage magazine).

Fran organised an ‘H&H Kitchen Day’ at the gorgeous house of Chloe and her sister Sasha. We were in kitchen heaven. Chloe had every gadget under the sun, including a 1970’s Thermomix, a thriving herb garden (pineapple sage anyone?) and… a wormery!
Fran and Chloe are both amazing cooks so they didn’t need much from us – just some quick nourishing recipes that can be thrown together for family and friends to enjoy after a long day at work.

We cooked at a leisurely pace, tasting everything as we went and made sure there was enough food for everyone to take home leftovers - true Filipino style.

Just a few hours later we had cooked up a feast. Chloe uncorked a magnum of red wine and we threw off our aprons….

You can find the recipes on our blog and a few will be on Vogue in the coming weeks. See here for more of our exclusive recipes for Vogue

Trans fats – trans fats occur when unsaturated fats are heated and chemically altered to turn them into solids in a process called hydrogenation. This process will give these fats a longer shelf life and make foods less likely to spoil – perfect for creating long lasting cheap food. The problem is that your body doesn’t recognise this fat as food. These trans fats inhibit the function of fatty acids in your body thus interfering with countless important functions in your body starting with the cells. They can cause cancer, heart disease, auto-immunity and infertility. Trans fats are not saturated fats, but unsaturated fats that have been turned into saturated fats chemically. All margarines, butter replacements, vegetable oils, cooking oils, shortenings and other fat replacements contain this deadly compound and are a staple ingredient of commercially sold pies, cakes, biscuits, and general packaged foods.
Don’t waste your money on these ‘foods’. Eat real butter, enjoy real food. Seek out the best you can at all times.
