Jasmine: I could have said ‘Free food. Seafood’ but I’m not all that good at foraging yet… I’ve mastered the art of grabbing at seaweed without slipping off the rock face but crustaceans are proving a bit more tricky. The crabs are way too fast, the muscles are well hidden under the rocks and I’m not sure I like the taste of barnacles….
After the triumph of my sea salt find I wanted to see what else was rich for the picking - I nibbled on some seaweed drying on the rocks after a day at the beach and it tasted really good. I identified it online as ‘sea lettuce’ - easy to cook and good for you. Oh and free.
Apparently you can throw it into salads but I have to say it was pretty chewy. So I tried it in a bowl of lentil soup that I was cooking. In just a few minutes it became a lovely melt in the mouth texture and reminded me of spinach but with a much less bitter flavour.
Why was the sand all wet? Because the sea weed.
